Principal's Message 9th August 2017

Dear Parents,

Enviro School
Cockle Bay School is excited to have recently been accepted into the Enviro Schools Programme, which is led by qualified staff at the Auckland Council. There is a long waiting list of schools wishing to participate and earlier in the year it seemed impossible for us to be considered. However, in a trial pilot, we are now buddying up with a 'Green Gold' Enviro school (Wakaaranga) and are supported by the Council, as we try to grow a generation of young people who instinctively think and act sustainably. This is not an add on, as environmental principles and learning are closely interwoven into the curriculum, particularly in Science but also in other learning areas. Staff are enthusiastic about this significant development and the authentic learning opportunities it will provide for our children.
One of our enthusiastic and knowledgeable parents is now helping CBS develop some of the front gardens. If you would like to learn about plans, we will soon have a display at reception. Watch this space!

Bee House
Coincidentally, New World has donated a gentle leaf cutter bee colony to selected schools including CBS, so we will be increasing pollination of flowers and vegetables in the future and educating our children in this area. The bees will arrive 11 September. Please see below for further details about this.

Art Exhibition
An Art Exhibition of children's works is planned for Week 7, the 5th-7th September. We hope all parents can drop in and admire what our talented youngsters have made over these days. Thanks go to Pauline Whaitiri and her Arts team of teachers and parents for organising the exhibition.

Hunger Busters
The 3pm Hunger Buster fundraisers on assembly days seem to be going well. We are working to improve crowd control so the juniors aren't overwhelmed. The P.T.N. have done a great job of getting this underway, and classes our now picking up the challenge, so thanks for your anticipated support of this initiative.
