What is an Interpreter?

The ability to translate,interpret and  communicate with extensive vocabulary in more than  one  language.

We have a full time teacher aide fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, plus many staff members fluent in Afrikaan.

At Cockle Bay School students are selected as interpreters to assist both staff and students in the following ways:

• To assist second language learners to understand  school rules and routines.
• Become a buddy to younger children.
• Become a support person in the  playground.
• Translate phone calls when necessary.
• Assist office staff when there is a language  barrier.
• Work in small group situations and provide in  class support for both the teacher and student.
• Opportunity to interact with people from the same  ethnic group so exposure to English is shared.
