Dear Parents, It seems unbelievable that a whole term has passed already. Such a lot has happened at Cockle Bay School. We have had a wonderful eleven weeks, full of fun and action-packed learning. Highlights have been in Meet the Teachers, Parent Teacher Conferences, Swimming Sports, Parent Mornings at School, P.T.N. Meetings and Working Bee and, of course, the Weka Walk, Kakapo Camp and, most recently, the Takahe Camp. It is only with the wonderful support of you, our parent community, that all these were so successful. Thanks to all parents who have attended school fixtures and who have given their time and expertise to help the school staff. Your contributions are very genuinely appreciated. Board of Trustees Parent Survey Thank you to all those who took the time to complete the Parent Survey. Your feedback is appreciated and in due course a summary of findings will be shared. Staff News Mrs Sophia La Monica has tendered her resignation, effective Tuesday 16th May. Sophia and her family are moving to Alexandra where they have purchased some land, and she has accepted a position as an early childhood teacher. We wish her all the very best for the move and her future career. We welcomed Mr Lindsay Knipe on Monday, joining us as the Learning Support Leader. You can find him in the Learning Support Office (accessed via the dome, between rooms 19 and 20). Thanks go to all staff for their work in Term 1. It has been eleven busy weeks resulting in stimulating classrooms with settled, happy children, getting on with their learning. School Grounds Before / After School CBS takes its responsibility to care for the safety and wellbeing of children before and after school seriously. Close supervision by staff of the school grounds before and after school is difficult, as most teachers are involved in classroom preparation at this time, but we do allocate specific after school duties to two staff members. For safety, we ask children to go straight home after school. They are welcome to return to play if their parents give permission. Children whose parents come to school at 3.00pm may stay to play supervised by parents. We are noticing a few children staying at school until 3.30 or 4.00pm, awaiting collection by car. With Auckland traffic being what it is, we understand some parents will occasionally be delayed. However, for safety reasons please tell your child / children that if they are at all worried, or it is getting late, they should come to the office. If you know you will be late you can telephone the school office to let us know. We can assist you in taking children to After School Care as needed if you are unavoidably detained on the odd occasion. School Grounds over the Holidays Cockle Bay School is a community school and you are welcome to use the school grounds over the holidays. We ask you to keep a friendly eye out for school property. Maintenance work is planned for adventure playgrounds, especially the one outside Rooms 1 - 5, so any changes you notice to these are unlikely to be vandalism! However, if you do notice any serious damage to other property which poses a Health & Safety or other risk, kindly advise caretaking staff or me on 021 243 3687. Non-urgent messages can also be left on the school answerphone on PH: 534 8333. For urgent, wilful damage to school property, please don't hesitate to ring 111. Thank you for helping us look after our school in this way. Safety Tips for Children Consider teaching your child/children the following: If collecting by car, have a regular meeting point - front of school, Kiss'n Go, Trelawn Pl, etc Go to the office if worried or not collected Never go with a stranger Have a password only you and your parents know, so you can trust someone you know who says your parents have sent them Shout for help, make a lot of noise if frightened Run fast .... around a car possibly makes it harder to be caught! It is suggested you don't ‘over-dwell' on possible dangers with children, to avoid them becoming fearful. We want children to face each day with confidence and joy! Parent/Teacher Conferences Thank you so much to the Year 2 parents who kindly provided a delicious afternoon tea for the staff during Parent Teacher conferences. It was much appreciated. Best wishes for a restful Easter Break and some quality family time. Dorothy Bigwood |
