We are really privileged to have 24 trained peer mediators at Cockle Bay School. These children provide a valuable service to the school helping to improve the school climate and atmosphere. They are able to use their life skills in conflict resolution, to encourage other children to handle conflict in positive, non-violent and constructive ways. The provide opportunities for children to solve many of their own conflicts and have had a substantial impact on the reduction of the incidence of conflict in the playground.

Potential Peer Mediators received training over a few weeks. This training included sessions on Active Listening, Using “I-Statements” and affirmations, recognising responses to conflict, open and closed questions and the role of the mediator. They were also fortunate to have a further training session with Mrs Christina Barruel, the Cool Schools National Manager.  The successful Peer Mediators were recognised at a school assembly and have been awarded a Peer Mediation badge.

They meet once a week, with Mrs Currey, the Peer Mediator Facilitator. They are enthusiastic about their duties and have shown great dedication and commitment in carrying out their regular duties.

As part of their duties, the Peer Mediators also “spot” children displaying the 4 Cockle Bay “C’s” , as well as those who are using “The Wheel of Choice” wisely. The names of these children are placed in a container, and a fortnightly draw is held at our school assemblies. Six names are drawn out of the container. The winners are awarded with a book.

We are proud of our Peer Mediators and the responsible and sensible attitudes which they demonstrate.
