WHAT IS SPELD?

SPELD is a New Zealand wide organisation whose purpose is to identify and educate students (children and adults) who have Specific Learning Disabilities, or Dyslexia.
SPELD is an open organisation which will make information freely available in response to inquiries from parents, teachers, psychologists, doctors or other interested people.  Every branch has access to a tester, registered with N.Z.C.E.R. (New Zealand Council of Educational Research), qualified to administer cognitive tests or diagnostic tests.  All SPELD teachers hold professional teaching qualifications and have undergone an intensive course of SPELD training.  An individual programme, based on the test report, is established for each student.  Students are taught at any time it is convenient to both teacher and student.  Many schools are happy to allow students to have SPELD lessons in school hours.  After approximately one year, it is recommended that a retest be done to determine progress and identify any necessary adjustments.  Currently Cockle Bay School has 2 teachers trained as SPELD tutors working in the school.
