NAG 5.1 SUN RISK (This policy will be implemented during Terms 1 and 4) RATIONALE There is evidence that avoiding sunburn in childhood reduces the risk of melanoma and other skin damage. PURPOSES • To develop an awareness among parents and children that October to March, between the hours of 11.00am to 4.00pm, are high risk hours for sunburn and ultra violet radiation. • To encourage children to take appropriate protective steps at high risk times so that it becomes an automatic action. GUIDELINES 1. Major sporting events should be as much as possible rescheduled to take place in the mornings between October – March and the sun protection policy is reflected in the planning of all outdoor events. 2. Sunhats blue or white, the wide-brimmed or “legionnaire” style, are a part of the compulsory uniform. 3. The general use of a clear SPF 30+ sunscreen reapplied every two hours especially during prolonged outdoor activities, such as school excursions, is encouraged. The use of coloured zinc is not acceptable. 4. Staff will be encouraged to provide positive role models. 5. SunSmart education programmes are included in the curriculum at all levels every year. 6. Children without hats will be directed by the duty teacher to a specific area in the shade, at the teachers discretion. 7. Children will wear hats during class and school Physical Education activities and all other outdoor activities. Children will be encouraged to wear their hats to and from school but not in the classrooms or school hall. 8. Children without hats will be regularly reminded to bring hats by the Leadership team and their classroom teacher. Children who frequently do not have hats will be given a reminder notice. 9. The use of sun protective clothing (e.g. sleeves and collars) is encouraged. 10. Children will be reminded about the need for hydration throughout the year. 11. The school will endeavour to provide reasonable sunshades at all sporting events 12. All staff, students and parents are to be informed of this policy and its intended practices and this policy will be regularly publicised and reinforced e.g. through newsletters, parent meetings.
